Our church was founded in 1875 as "Rougemont Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In April of 1917 an additional 2 acres was deeded to the trustees from Dr. E.H. Bowling and wife Mattie J. Bowling. This land was for a cemetery that is not currently being used, but still stands, located on Quail Roost Road. The first church building was located where the old parsonage now stands beside the current church building on Red Mountain Road. Reverend Leon Hall, who served the church in 1916 and 1917, was partially responsible for the present church building by pouring the concrete for the church steps.

The present building was built in three stages. The sanctuary was completed first, followed by an educational building and then by a fellowship hall which was added in 1973. In 1988, Julia Webb- Bowden was appointed as our first full-time minister and first woman minister. Untill this time, we were served by Duke Divintiy School students. Over the years, we have continued to update the physical part of the church by adding the Myrtle Ruth Denny Nursery, the Hazel and Marie Poole Playground, and Mollie Clayton Memorial Prayer Garden. Recently the church has added a storage building.

In addition to physical growth, our church also continues to grow spiritually with the continuance of some ministries and the addition of others. Our United Methodist Women continues to be active in the community by making donations and serving those in need. Recently our congregation has started two new ministries. One is the Open Tables Ministry, which is an extension ministry of the Rougemont Charge. The other new ministry, is our Prayer Shawl Ministry. Currently this ministry consists of five ladies from our church. Today, our church is part of the "Rougemont Charge" which also includes Union Grove United Methodist Church and New Bethel United Methodist Church. These three churches are served by one full-time pastor, Douglas Wagner. Pastor Doug is assisted by two Duke Divinity School interns. We currently participate in a long standing tradition of having a fall church Bazzar which in recent years has added the addition of an annual yard sale.

garden   These two events are held each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. We also currently participate in the Rougemont community Easter parade where we enter a float and have a baked goods booth at the festival following the parade. Our congregation meets each month on the fourth Sunday at 8:30 to enjoy a fellowship breakfast and to talk about church business before the beginning of Sunday School and worship. We look forward to many more years of worship, fellowship, and ministry in our community and beyond.
